Collagen shots for hair and nails: do they really work?

For nails, the evidence is strong: a study by Hessel et al. (2017) showed a 42 percent reduction in nail breakage and 12 percent faster nail growth in 25 women after 24 weeks of daily collagen peptides. For hair growth, the clinical evidence is weaker but biologically plausible: collagen provides glycine and proline, building blocks needed for keratin production in hair. Expect measurable nail improvement within 6 to 12 weeks; for hair, be patient for at least 6 months.

What is the link between collagen and hair roots?

Hair itself is not made of collagen. It is keratin. But the hair roots (follicles) are embedded in a layer of connective tissue primarily composed of collagen. A healthy, well-perfused, collagen-rich dermis supports strong hair roots and thus strong hair.

Clinical study on nail breakage and collagen

The study by Hessel (2017) is the most cited:

  • 25 women with brittle nails.
  • 2.5 g bioactive collagen peptides daily for 24 weeks.
  • Results: 12 percent faster growth, 42 percent less breakage, 64 percent of participants reported improved nail appearance.

Does it help with hair loss?

Honestly: there are hardly any good RCTs specifically on hair loss and collagen. What we do know: amino acid deficiency can worsen hair loss, and collagen is rich in specific amino acids. For people with sub-optimal protein intake, this is likely relevant. For genetic hair loss (male pattern baldness, female androgenetic alopecia), collagen is not a treatment.

What dosage for hair and nails?

Studies used 2.5 to 10 g per day. The Hessel study used only 2.5 g, so for nails specifically, a moderate dose is often sufficient. For combined skin, hair, and nail effects: 10 g, as in ACTIVATE.

Combination with other ingredients in ACTIVATE

In addition to 10 g Peptan bovine collagen, ACTIVATE also contains silicon (Bloosil), vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, vitamin D3, and SOD. Silicon is known for its supportive role in hair and nail growth. Vitamin C is essential for the production of keratin and collagen. The combination provides a synergistic effect for hair and nails.

Realistic timeline for hair growth

Hair grows an average of 1 cm per month. For visible differences in hair quality or density, expect at least 6 months. For nails: 6 to 12 weeks for visible improvements.
