Collagen shots vs. powder vs. pills: what works best?
Collagen shots are demonstrably more effective than powders and certainly better than capsules or tablets. For one simple reason: dosage and absorbability. The clinically effective dose is 10 g per day. In capsules, this would mean 10 to 20 capsules per day. With powder, you still have to mix and dose. A shot delivers the full dose in 25 ml, ready-to-drink, with the highest biological absorption. The liquid form ensures optimal absorption and maximum convenience.
The three forms compared
| Form | Dosage 10 g | Absorption | Convenience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shot (liquid) | 1 shot of 25 ml | Highest, up to 91 percent | Highest, directly drinkable |
| Powder | 1 scoop to mix | High, after dissolving | Moderate, requires mixing |
| Capsules/pills | 10-20 capsules per day | High (per peptide) | Low, too much swallowing |
The most important difference: dosage
The clinical studies on which all skin, joint, and hair claims are based used dosages between 2.5 g (minimum) and 10 g (optimal) per day. An average capsule contains 500 to 1000 mg of collagen, or 0.5 to 1 gram. Do the math.
Why you would have to take 20 pills a day for the same dose
For 10 g of collagen via capsules:
- Capsules with 500 mg collagen: 20 capsules per day.
- Capsules with 1000 mg collagen: 10 capsules per day.
Realistically, hardly anyone takes 10 to 20 capsules a day. Usually no more than 2 or 3. This means that in practice, you only get 1 to 3 g of collagen, well below the effective dose. Capsules are not wrong, they are just almost always underdosed.
Shot versus powder: the difference
Both can deliver 10 g of collagen per serving. The difference:
- Shot: directly drinkable, ready-to-use, at room temperature, neutral taste. Liquid form is biologically directly available.
- Powder: needs to be mixed with water, smoothie, or yogurt. Works fine but requires an extra step every morning. Risk: forgetting, poor dissolving, lumps.
For those who want consistency over 12 weeks, convenience is decisive. The shot wins there.
Absorption and bioavailability
Premium hydrolyzed collagen (such as Peptan) has a biological absorption of up to 91 percent, regardless of the form. In a shot, the peptides are already fully dissolved and immediately ready for absorption. In powder form, your body first has to process the solution, which comes out similarly.
Convenience versus effectiveness
Capsules are attractive because of their convenience (no taste, easy to carry). But if you have to take 10 to 20 capsules for an effect, the opposite is true: one 25 ml shot emptied in 10 seconds is much easier than a handful of pills.
Cost per measured effective dose
Consider: a typical capsule product of 25 euros contains 60 capsules of 500 mg, totaling 30 g. At 20 capsules per day, that's a 3-day supply, or about 8 euros per day. An ACTIVATE box of 28 shots covers a month with daily use. The price per effective daily dose is much more favorable for shots.
When is a pill logical then?
For low maintenance dosages (1 to 2 g per day), capsules are an option, for example if you eat healthily and only want to supplement your collagen intake. To reach the clinically effective level of 5 to 10 g, choose a shot or powder.
Why Labo Mariva chose the shot form
According to our product developers, collagen has the best absorbability in a liquid shot, which other forms often cannot offer. By working with a liquid form, we were able to offer the maximum dose of 10 g in one shot. High convenience, on the go, directly usable and pleasant at room temperature.
Ready to experience the difference yourself?
ACTIVATE is our premium collagen shot with 10 g Peptan bovine collagen (up to 91 percent absorption), combined with silicon (Bloosil), vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, vitamin D3, and SOD. One daily 25 ml shot, with a refreshing pomegranate flavor.
